For its new UNHATE campaign, fashion retailer Benetton created a series of posters that feature political and spiritual leaders of the world tenderly kissing.
Pope Benedict XVI has his lips locked with Ahmed Mohamed el-Tayeb, Imam of the Al-Azhar mosque in Cairo; President Barack Obama with Hugo Chavez of Venezuela; Barack Obama with Chinese leader Hu Jintao; Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas with the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu; German Chancellor Angela Merkel with French President Nicolas Sarkozy; North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-Il with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, Hugo Chavez of Venezuela.
“These symbolic images of reconciliation—with a touch of ironic hope and constructive provocation—to stimulate reflection on how politics, faith and ideas, even when they are divergent and mutually opposed, must still lead to dialogue and mediation,” a press release by Benetton said.
Leaders and citizens of the world are invited to combat the “culture of hatred”, and can contribute images of themselves kissing to the Kiss Wall.
French director Laurent Chanez also created a short film for the UNHATE foundation—which shows a multitude of people from all over the world having both reasons to hate and love.
