Modified Typewriter Prints Colors, Instead of Letters


Washington-based painter Tyree Callahan modified a 1937 Underwood Standard typewriter, so that it prints colors rather than letters.

The ‘Chromatic Typewriter’ had its letters and keys replaced with color pads and hue labels—to create a functional, mechanical ‘painting’ device.
