From 1 January 1999, Jeff Harris started his one-self-portrait-a-day project and never stopped taking pictures since then.
He began taking self-portraits everyday using his Olympic Stylus 35mm film camera and after 13 years (as of 31 December 2011) he’s accumulated 4,748 photographs to tell a story about his life.
“I see no reason to not make a self-portrait each day,” Harris said. “I’m always around and always free. It’s kind of like going to the gym—it flexes your muscles and keeps you in shape.”
Even when Harris was getting an operation for a tumour in his pelvis, he asked his doctors to take a picture.
And after the op, which left his left leg paralyzed, he still goes out with his camera at hand.
“I didn’t want 365 images of me sitting on the couch each day,” he said. “There could have been that tendency, especially during the cold dark winter months to stay inside all the time, but this project inspired me to get out there and seek out interesting things.”
