From 8AM to 8PM EST on 18 January 2012, the internet is going on Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA) strikes to block the internet censorship bill.
The bill would give both the government and major corporations the power to shut down websites that are accused of copyright infringement—with no trial or traditional court hearing.
To protect the rights to free speech, privacy and prosperity, various sites—such as Boing Boing, Wikipedia, Google, all I Can Has Cheezburger? sites, and Reddit—have joined the movement by blacking out their sites in different ways; it is rumored that 9gag might be joining the strike as well.
Big internet players social media sites Facebook and Twitter have not been supportive of the strike, according to Reuters.
Participating sites would blackout their sites so that visitors may only see information about SOPA and PIPA.
Designers and websites, such as Zachary Johnson and ProtestSOPA.org, have also created different tools to help websites strike.
On 24 January 2012, the US Congress will vote whether or not to pass internet censorship in the Senate—even though majority of Americans are opposing the idea.
