Barbie As Mona Lisa, Lady Liberty, And More…

French artist Jocelyn Grivauld fascination’s with Barbie dolls ever since she was a little girl and her appreciation for art has led her to find a way to incorporate both in her work.

Titled ‘Barbie My Muse’, it is a collection of Barbie’s images incorporated onto various historically famous artworks as a tribute to great artists, from Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa to Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe to even The Statue of Liberty.

Grivauld, who received her first Barbie in 1967, hopes to change the plastic model’s stereotype as merely a superficial blonde with unrealistic body proportions.

Barbie turned 50 in 2009 which prompted Grivauld to begin on her collection.

She cites the series as her “personal contribution as a birthday present to [her] mascot, Barbie, superimposed on the vision of artists whose work [she] greatly appreciates”.

Barbie has taken on many roles before but these ones will certainly elevate her standing in the art world.
