Manchester-based photographer Lee Jeffries first befriended homeless people before taking their portraits.
Jeffries—who started out as a sports photographer—adopted this approach after feeling uncomfortable about photographing a young homeless girl in London secretly from a distance.
“Situations arose, and I made an effort to learn to get to know each of the subjects before asking their permission to do their portrait,” says Jeffries.
His haunting photographs of the homeless across Europe and the US have proven humanistic in capturing vividly the hardships of living on the streets.
