Japanese car manufacturer Nissan has announced the world’s first self-healing iPhone case.
The Nissan ‘Scratch Shield Case’ uses Nissan’s ‘Scratch Guard Coat’ paint technology, developed about six years ago, that repairs scratches on painted surfaces by itself.
The case is made of ABS plastic, polyrotaxane, a chemical structure that is able to react and change back to its original shape and fill the gap that results from a fine scratch—‘healing’ the blemish.
The healing process of Scratch Shield would be able to heal small scratches in as little as an hour, while more severe scratches could take up to a week—depending on the damage.
Nissan also says that the casing has a gel-like surface to provide better grip.
The paint finish was created in collaboration with University of Tokyo and Advanced Softmaterials Inc, and “has been designed using several automotive engineering innovations to deliver a more durable and long-lasting paint coat, and closely fitting, tight case”.
Nissan has only released a protoype for testing, but Scratch Shield could be available to the general public later in the year.
