An aquarium in Kesennuma, a city in northeast Japan, is like no other—it uses flash-freezing technology.

The extraordinary aquarium in the Uminoichi seafood market preserves live fish, as they are unloaded from the port on the Pacific Ocean. The frozen specimens are then displayed in the Kori no Suizokukan (ice aquarium), at a temperature of 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

So far, a total of 450 specimens, made up of 80 different species of local marine life from Kesennuma waters, are kept in 40 ice blocks of the aquarium.

When visiting the unique aquarium, guests would have to don warm jackets and pants upon entering, even on a blazing hot summer day.
