Mitsubishi Announces The World’s Fastest Elevator


Japanese company Mitsubishi Electric Corporation has announced an ultra-high-speed elevator that travels faster than 16 meters per second (faster than 1,000 meters per minute).

According to a statement by Mitsubishi, the technology would be integrated into the 632-meter high Shanghai Tower.

The Shanghai Tower in Shanghai, China, will have 128 floors and 106 elevators, and should be completed in 2014.

The role of the fastest elevator in the world is “in response to the increasing height of high-rise buildings amid continuing urban population growth, the role of elevators is gaining even greater importance,” the company said in a statement.

“Mitsubishi Electric is developing advanced solutions incorporating technologies advanced solutions incorporating technologies and equipment for enhanced drive and controllability, safety, super high-rise cable mechanics and passenger comfort.”

The company’s new high-speed elevator would include advanced features that would ensure comfort for elevator passengers and energy efficiency.

Some of these include: air pressure controls, to minimize rapid changes in atmospheric pressure for reduced ear discomfort; and new active roller guides, to reduce vibration from guide rails and wind.
