Saudi Arabian artist Manal Al Dowayan has created an installation of 200 suspended doves to highlight the oppression of women in her country.
Titled ‘Suspended Together’, it first gives the impression of movement and freedom.
However, upon closer inspection, the doves are actually frozen and incapable of flight.
Each fiberglass dove carries a Saudi woman’s ‘permission document’ issued by her male guardian to allow her to travel.
These documents have been collected from various leading scientists, educators, journalists, engineers and artists—all of them women.
The youngest contributor is six months old and the oldest is 60 years old.
In Al Dowayan’s words, “regardless of age and achievement, when it comes to travel, all these women are treated like a flock of suspended doves".
This provoking piece of artwork was featured at the 54th Venice Biennale held last year.
