Danish architecture firm BIG (Bjarke Ingles Group) has erected a giant red heart installation in the middle of New York City’s Time square that can measure love’s heartbeat.
Titled ‘BIG♥NYC’, the 10-foot high interactive sculpture will glow brighter and beat faster when couples touch the heart and hold hands or kiss.
The giant heart is illuminated by 400 transparent LED acrylic tubes which refracts Times Square’s neon lights as after all, it is created “out of the very materials that constitute Times Square: movement, lights, the masses”.
Hosted by the Times Square Alliance, the installation celebrates Valentine’s Day and will remain on view till the end of the month.
It says on the Alliance’s website: “The elasticity of the tubes makes them wiggle in the wind causing the heart to pulsate along with the life of the city. More people = more love”.
Indeed.
