Chicago's Iconic 'Bean' Gets Trippy Makeover

Chicago-based artists Sean Gallero and Petra Bachmaier who collaborate under the moniker ‘Luftwerk’ has transformed Anish Kapoor’s iconic ‘Cloud Gate’ (a.k.a. ‘The Bean’) into a psychedelic light and sound installation.

Titled ‘Luminous Field’, the work is a playground of sorts, created by mounting 10 projectors on truss towers that illuminate the area with shifting geometric shapes and colors, lending a very trippy effect to the structure.

“We like the combination of image and surface, and the surface can be a structure, an architectural space, or a material,” Bachmaier says. “What happens between those two is what really interests us.”

The public will be able to “follow and engage with light” from now till Feb. 20.
