Designer Creates Entirely-Wooden Shoes, Using Milling Machines

Designer Cat Potter has created a line of shoes made of entirely wood, using three-axis milling machines.

In ‘Pernilla’, Potter experimented with various traditional methods of design and construction, used alternative materials and technologies in the fabrication of shoes.

“I began this work using a material that was readily available and that had traditional roots in the fabrication of footwear,” Potter wrote.

“Using wood in conjunction with milling machines has allowed me to explore shape without being restricted by traditional shoe components like insole boards, shanks, or toe and heel puffs.”

Potter also used a 3D scanner to trace the silhouette form of the foot on the inside of the shoe (the parts that envelop the foot).

The silhouette of the foot becomes the profile of the outside of the shoe.
