Artist Creates Portrait Out of Coffee Stains

Following her last painting of Yao Ming using a basketball, Shanghai-based Malaysian artist Hong Yi has returned with another unusual creation.

This time, she has created a portrait of popular Taiwanese star Jay Chou with just coffee stains of a cup.

The 26-year-old artist nicknamed Red, spent 12 hours to complete the portrait in Shanghai on Valentine’s Day.

Hong Yi’s painting is meant to look like a sepia-toned old photograph to capture the essence of a Jay Chou’s song titled ‘Secret’ which moved her.

According to Hong Yi, the portrait is inspired by the song’s opening sentence, about lifting up a coffee cup off the saucer, and the ending of the song about autumn leaves and fragmented pieces.

“This is shown through the portrait as a whole—how it's formed by many individual rings, many of them broken and imperfect like fallen autumn leaves, forming Jay Chou's portrait,” she says.
