How Much Would It Cost To Build A Real Star Wars ‘Death Star’?

Lehigh University students, who run an economics blog Centives, decided to find out how much it would cost, how long it would take, and how much materials would be needed, to build a real-life Death Star.

Students first observed how big the Death Star was and what material it was made of, 140km in diameter and steel—which meant that the Death Star required 1.08x(10 to the power of 15) tons of steel.

And since today’s cost of steel and rate of steel production (which is 1.3 billion tons per year), it would take 833,315 years and US$852,000,000,000,000,000 to produce enough steel to build the space station—about 13,000 times the worlds GDP, according to Centives.

Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader must’ve been filthy rich—being on The Dark Side isn’t so terrible after all.
