Japanese company Air Danshin Systems Inc. is implementing a system across sites in Japan, that uses air pressure to levitate homes during an earthquake.

The earthquake-proofing system, according to Spoon & Tamago, requires little maintenance and is relatively low in cost compared to other systems.

When rumblings of earthquakes are detected through the system’s sensor, air would be pushed into its air tank within 0.5 to 1 second, and homes would be lifted as high as 3cm off the ground from an artificial foundation.

The levitated home would not be as highly affected and vibrated as much as the ground, and once the earthquake is over, it returns back to the ground.
