‘Boutique’ Hospital Wing for Teenage Cancer Patients

Teenagers diagnosed with cancer are placed in either a children’s ward or an adult one, environments not particularly suited for active 14-year-olds.

But at the New Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, England, the Teenage Cancer Trust’s Young Persons Unit has been revamped by design studio two create to create a less depressing environment for these teenagers to be in.

This wing consists of a study room, a small cinema and café, and a 12-patient ward that have individual unique themes, such as ‘sixties Pop Art’ and ‘NYC Loft’. Walls were painted in different dramatic colours for each room, and covered with vinyl cut-out shapes.

The hospital wing was designed in response to the sort of environment patients would like to spend time in. The opinions of current patients were taken into consideration to design the boutique-style wards that reflected their interest.

With these rooms, teenage cancer patients were offered a place where they can receive specialist care and be in an environment that is less-depressing, and with people that are in similar situations.
