‘You Are What You Eat’, a Photo Series
Midwife/Middle School Teacher, San Antonio. First week after deciding to eat all local produce—Mark Menjivar
Mark Menjivar’s photo series You Are What You Eat puts the adage to the test.
The photographer traveled the country, visiting all sorts of people—rich, poor, NRA members, veterans, and so on—to photograph the insides of their refrigerator, as-is.
“One person likened the question, ‘May I photograph the interior of your fridge?’ to asking someone to pose nude for the camera,” Menjivar wrote, hinting at the voyeurism involved in his project.
To each photo, Menjivar added a short description of the refrigerator owner: his or her occupation, the number of people in the household and a personality quirk.
While the photographer doesn't prescribe a relationship between food and person, some examples confirm certain stereotypes, like a shotgun-toting carpenter/photographer from Texas with a freezer filled with meat and a bottle of tequila.
