Every Time You Close Your Eyes, This Lamp Switches Off
By Anthea Quay, 19 Apr 2012
According to BBC News, when you blink, part of your brain temporarily switches off.
And while you have your eyes closed as you blink, you don’t really need the light on.
So to save on that bit of carbon footprint, Randy Sarafan has created a way to save energy in spirit of Earth Day.
Called ‘Energy-Saving Light’, Sarafan’s lighting solution consists of a lamp that’s rigged, to be switched on only when your eyes are open.
In this sense, users get light only when they need to, and darkness when they don’t. (And by blinking very often, users also get to annoy those in the same room.)
“This is not only beneficial to you and your energy bill, but great for Mother Earth,” Sarafan wrote about his device.
He used an EMG sensor to detect when the lamp’s user closes or blinks his eyes, and programed the light to react accordingly.
Sarafan also created a step-by-step tutorial on Instructables for those interested in installing the solution.
