It is without question that the usage of social media has risen and it plays a vital role in people’s lives in terms of sharing information.
But has it come to the point where we forget the consequences of posting too much information, that we are actually putting ourselves at risk?
Informatics website Online Education has created an infographic titled ‘Are People Sharing Too Much Online’ that explores what information we should not share online and the risks that we put ourselves in if we do.
According to the infographic, 4.8 million people share that they are leaving the house—while 20.4 million share their full birth date online.
By doing so, it actually puts us in the risk of having our homes burgled and having our identity stolen.
The infographic reports that ex-burglars, who were interviewed in Britain, would use social media sites like Facebook and Foursquare to identity their targets.
It was also discovered that there are people who share their social security, credit card and phone numbers online—just to receive shopping discounts.
The main reasons why people overshare were also revealed; it provides satisfaction, it serves as a coping mechanism when we are upset or we are excited and wish to share the good news with others.
