Speculative Work, Why Designers Shouldn’t Work For Free
By John Yong, 28 Jun 2012
In a video by Topic Simple, they dive straight into the world of design to explain the term ‘spec work’ or ‘speculative work’ and why designers should stay away from it.
The video explores the wrong doings behind the term—which basically means ‘working for free’—explaining that is an unreasonable trend in the design field and why it does not exist in other industries.
An example given by the video: You get three chefs to cook a meal for free, but only pay for the best one.
It also highlights the downsides it might have on companies who hire designers to submit spec works—such as unoriginal content.
Designers—we do hope you are taking notes!
