Coca-Cola Creates Vending Machine That Uses No Power To Keep Drinks Cool
If self-chilling can drinks don’t work out, Coca-Cola Japan has teamed up with Fuji Electric Retail Systems to create a back-up plan—a new vending machine that keeps beverages cool without using power for 16 hours a day.
Called the ‘A011 Peak Shift’, the vending machine cools products only during the night instead of the daytime—to take advantage of the surplus power capacity at night.
The machine is also made with airtight doors and insulation materials, to prevent cold air from escaping and reduce the impact of outside temperature.
Currently, the machines are being tested at Saitama Prefecture’s Kumagaya City and Gifu Prefecture’s Tajimi City.
According to Coca-Cola, the A011 can reduce daytime energy use by 95%.
The machine was created as a response to the earthquake disaster in Japan last year, when the country was left with a shortage of electricity.
