Project Aura is a lighting system designed for cyclists who often ride at night, increasing their visibility to motorists and, hopefully, avert accidents.
The system supplants reflectors and tiny attachable lights with a LED strip encircling both wheels of the bicycle. According to designers Ethan Frier and Jonathan Ota, unlike reflectors, Project Aura has a large visibility footprint, “especially from the side”.
The LED also changes color from red when slowing down to white when at cruising speed, so motorists can respond appropriately. Project Aura is powered by a hub generator instead of batteries; all cyclists have to is pedal.
Already, Project Aura has picked up a Core77 Design Award student prize for the Transportation Design category. Frier and Ota are currently looking into ways to manufacture their innovation on a larger scale.
