The First Photo Ever Uploaded To The Internet

On 18 July 1992, the first photographic image was uploaded onto the World Wide Web.

It was taken by Silvano de Gennaro, an IT developer at European research institute CERN who managed the all-female parody pop group, who were also employees of CERN, Les Horribles Cernettes.

Almost 20 years ago, de Gennaro took the picture using a Canon EOS 650 for Les Horribles Cernettes—that features Angela Higney, Michele de Gennaro, Colette Marx-Neilsen, and Lynn Veronneau—digitally altered it in Photoshop 1.0, and intended to use it as a CD cover image.

The photo was passed to fellow CERN employee and Cernettes fan, British computer scientist, MIT professor and inventor of the World Wide Web Tim Berners-Lee.

Despite it being a Photoshop disaster, the photo's historical significance cannot be ignored.
