UK to Legalize Digital Content Copying
Authorities in the UK are poised to legalize a popular form of digital content copying: ripping CDs and DVDs for personal use.

The new legislation is part of a wider review of UK laws that seek to find those that have been outdated by technological change, reports the BBC.

Ripping content from CDs and DVDs are legal in the US provided the discs have been legally purchased and is for personal use. In fact, Britain is one of the last countries in Europe who have yet to effect the change.

Under the new ruling, consumers will be able to copy say a music album they bought onto their iPhones or computers, but will not allow them to share the content over the internet, reports Reuters.

“Digital communications technology involves routine copying of text, images and data, meaning that copyright law has started to act as a regulatory barrier to the creation of certain kinds of new, internet-based businesses,” wrote Professor Ian Hargreaves in a report in May. Hargreaves played a major role in recommending which UK laws should be overturned, according to Reuters.

Another law being modified is ones surrounding parody. The UK will be relaxing these laws to give artists more fuel to inspire their work.

“There are all sorts of things that are genuine artistic works which are nevertheless based on parody, caricature and pastiche,” media law specialist Susan Hall told the BBC.
