The Microsoft HD DVD Interactivity Jumpstart Package contains software and utilities to simulate, test and debug HD DVD applications. Fonts are resource files, also known as assets, and are included on the HD DVD disc along with the video, audio and graphic assets. OpenType fonts allow text to be displayed on screen with breathtaking clarity, and offer HD DVD authors an expanded creative palette to express the personality of each title.
The font license with the Microsoft HD DVD Interactivity Jumpstart Package allows authors to use the fonts 'as is' with a title, and not to make any modifications to the fonts. Ascender's team of type designers and font software engineers can develop enhancements to the fonts, such as additional character sets, language support or other font styles if desired. Ascender also offers HD DVD authors an extensive collection of additional fonts and styles in the OpenType font format to select from.
Steve Matteson, Ascender's Type Director, designed the following eight fonts that are included with the Microsoft HD DVD Interactivity Jumpstart Package:
- Kootenay™ regular - an approachable, curvaceous sans serif typeface that works particularly well for on-screen reading and user interfaces.
- Lindsey™ regular - a casual script font made to simulate youthful handwriting.
- Miramonte™ regular and bold - an unpretentious sans serif design with elegant proportions that has a wide range of uses in print and on screen.
- Pericles™ light and regular - an attractive sans serif typeface for headlines and short passages of text which recall inscriptional lettering and playful, art deco design.
- Pescadero™ regular and bold - a delicate and detailed serif typeface that adds a touch of distinction and elegance.
The Ascender fonts were licensed by Microsoft to showcase the advanced OpenType typographic features available to HD DVD authors, including the ability to leverage true small capitals, old style figures, tabular figures, proportional figures, superscripts and subscripts, alternative vowels and ligatures.
