An Augmented Reality Arcade Game That’s a Car

An old SEGA Out-Run arcade game has been mounted onto a golf cart, to create a real-world car with an in-game feel.

Garnet Hertz has installed webcams and programmed the old game with a software, to take real-world images and displays them as 8-bit in-game roads and obstacles on the monitor. The product: ‘OutRun’.

The ‘OutRun’ vehicle runs at 13 miles per hour, uses the original pedals and steering wheel of the game for the controls; while the motors, wheels, and drive train of the electric golf cart were fixed into the cabinet of the game.

Where games are trying to be more realistic, Hertz de-simulated the game, to put real driving into a game. His idea was to explore the use of computers as a navigation tool for driving, especially for those in wheelchairs.
