‘Smart’ Interactive Highway Adapts To Traffic Needs
Dutch design firm Studio Roosegaarde has teamed up with Heijmans Infrastructure to develop the first prototype of an intelligent, interactive ‘smart highway’.
Soon to be ready in the Netherlands by mid-2013, the innovative concept seeks to improve the driving experience by focusing on the roads instead of the cars.
By updating the highways with new designs, the new smart highway will feature energy-efficient “glow-in-the-dark roads”, “dynamic paint” that makes relevant road signs visible to the driver when required, and high-tech light systems that adapt to traffic conditions.
The smart highway will not only make driving safer but also be more environmentally sustainable than its predecessor.
