Microsoft Patents Long-Distance Virtual Hugs & Handshakes
Soon, friends and family living apart would be able to keep in touch by sending physically perceivable hugs and handshakes to one another.
Microsoft has just been awarded a patent on “Force-feedback within teleprescence”, a technology that would allow individuals separated by long distances to communicate physically using interactive, connected devices.
Such devices are currently imagined to take the form of plush toys that work like a soft, music-playing telephones that will translate physical touch on one device to soothing vibrations on a counterpart device “on the other end of the line”.
While nothing beats the comfort of a genuine hug from a loved one, a virtual hug is probably a lot better than a cold, electronically transmitted message.
