In Japan, A Striking, Unconventionally Colorful Ad For Funeral Services
By Dorothy Tan, 14 May 2013
Tokyo-based agency I&S BBDO has created an unusual ad for its client Nishinihon Tenrei, which is in the funeral services business.
Tasked to create an unconventional ad that would stand out in the socially sensitive industry, the agency found a way to introduce bright colors to the muted color scheme—consisting of black, white and gray—that is usually associated with funeral homes, without coming across as being disrespectful.
Using beautiful pressed flowers to piece together a life-sized human skeleton, the striking image manages to express not only the traditional sorrow that comes with death, but also provides “a way to remember and celebrate the beauty of a lost person’s life”.
The ad was a hit with both the client and visitors at the tradeshow where it was unveiled—it is now part of Nishinihon Tenrei’s identity on the company’s corporate materials.
It has also won a design merit award at the 2013 One Club Awards.
