LED Bike Light Highlights Potholes And Road Obstructions
By Erwan Xiao, 30 May 2013
‘Lumigrids’ is a handlebar mounted LED bicycle light that projects a square grid onto the ground.
Upon encountering potholes or other variations in surface, the projected grid will break and distort, allowing the cyclist to identify upcoming obstructions.
The team of designers from Sichuan University in China claims that the ‘Lumigrids’ has an advantage over traditional bicycle lights because it does not “cast shadows on both concave and convex areas of the ground” which would hinder a cyclist’s ability to understand the surface conditions.
The ‘Lumigrids’ also includes three grid sizes which are used in different situations.
The default projection size is a 5.5 x 7.1-inch grid. ‘High Speed Mode’ will increase the size to 5.5 x 10.2 inches while ‘Team Mode’ will widen the grid even further to 11.8 x 7.9 inches.
‘Lumigrids’ is currently still a design concept and is not available commercially. It won the Red Dot Design Award for 2012.
