New Pentagram-Designed Signs Welcome Visitors To NYC Beaches Post-Sandy
Design firm Pentagram has designed new signs for NYC’s beaches, that were destroyed last October when Hurricane Sandy hit the coast.
The new design aims to make visitors feel welcoming without the use of any massive structures to guide them there.
To do this, Paula Scher of Pentagram took herself back to her childhood memories and thought about the excitement of entering the beach for the first time, and sought to recreate this sensation.
The resulting signs are thoughtfully executed full-color photographs of its beach from that very spot.
Pentagram also gave an graphic design update to the ‘no lifeguard on duty’ placard, and additionally, new buildings to the shore were designed by Garrison Architects and Sage and Coombe Architects.
