A Necktie Woven From Recycled Cassette Tape That Actually Plays Music
By Dorothy Tan, 10 Jun 2013
Sound and conceptual artist Alyce Santoro has invented an innovative textile that is a woven blend of polyester thread and recycled audiocassette tape—amazingly, this fabric is capable of playing music.
Named “Sonic Fabric”, this textile was originally meant solely for use in installation artworks but has since been made into wearable neckties for fashionable men.
Available in black, dark brown and light gray, these unusual neckties feature sound collages from Santoro’s CD, which is based on “looped and layered samples collected on and under the streets of NYC”.
To listen to this unconventional “record”, build an audio reader for your Sonic Fabric necktie in the video below.
We think that this will make a quirky Father’s Day gift for dads who used to love listening to cassettes.
