Artist Creates A Portrait Of Nelson Mandela By Punching A Wall 27,000 Times
By Dorothy Tan, 12 Jul 2013
Shanghai-based artist Phil Akashi has created a powerful mural of Nelson Mandela by punching a wall 27,000 times.
Using a boxing glove that has been attached with an ink stamp of the Chinese characters for “freedom” (“自由”), Akashi painstakingly punched out the large-scale portrait of the legendary freedom-fighter.
The artwork and its unusual process is a tribute to Mandela and his inspiring struggle against the Apartheid—“This artwork exemplifies Nelson Mandela’s 27 years of incarceration, but also symbolizes his lifelong brave stand for equality. Nelson Mandela is an extraordinary artist of peace.”
Alongside street art by local creatives, this mural can be found at the Shanghai Graffiti Park—watch how it was made in the video below.
