Arizona-based photographer Rolf Maeder drove to the Grand Canyon with two friends to capture some pictures of the sunset—instead, he came away with stunning images of multiple lightning bolts striking down from awe-inspiring stormy skies.

A case of being at the right place at the right time, Maeder and his companions noticed that a lightning storm was brewing when they were on Moran Point—they quickly set up their equipments and started shooting.

One of the photographs he took, with a Nikon D800, 24mm lens at f/8, ISO 400 and a 25 sec. exposure, captures an astounding scene of two lightning bolts hitting the Grand Canyon at once—“The long exposure made it possible to catch two lightning bolts with one shot!”

Check out more of Maeder’s work on his website.
