Design Company Proposes A Cleaner, More Readable Layout For Wikipedia
By Jillian Wong, 13 Feb 2014
New Wikipedia web layout
Design company 1910 Design & Communication has come up with a redesigned layout of online encyclopedia Wikipedia for web, tablet and mobile.
According to the firm, the out-dated font, small text size, too-long lines and tiny pictures were some of the issues hindering the readability of the website.
They set about creating a new and improved version which included pushing the content to the center, increasing the text size and leading, having bigger images and using grids to ensure ample white space and an easy to follow hierarchy.
Though many of the original Wikipedia elements were left unchanged, the various tweaks resulted in a cleaner and more readable layout that still feels familiar.
Check out the redesigned layouts below and head over here to learn more about the project.
Current Wikipedia web layout
An 8-column grid with the body spanning over the first 4 columns
The new design is cleaner and more browsable but still feels familiar
The new tablet layout scales the grid to 4 columns. Side-bar content is located below its corresponding paragraphs and the second menu header is accessible from a menu button in the primary header
The new mobile layout uses a 2-column grid with shorter lines to make text readable. Secondary sections are closed by default and opened by tapping their titles, making it easier to scroll
