Google To Launch US$50 Customizable Smartphone Next Year
By Dorothy Tan, 03 Mar 2014
Google is set to change the way we use technology again—last week, it announced that the “Project Ara”, a modular smartphone it has been developing, may hit the market by next year.
Designed to be customizable and offer choices to consumers, the Ara smartphone consists of a basic chassis provided by Google whose functionality can be built up with third-party hardware.
The basic chassis would only come with Wi-Fi compatibility, but the advantage of owning one is that you can decide on the exact functions you would like your smartphone to have—for instance, more storage, better battery capacity or even higher-end speakers.
Although the plan is to set the price point at US$50, the addition of desired modular components may drive the Ara’s cost up considerably.
