Hang Out In This Cool Spider Web-Like Installation Made From Packaging Tape
By Yap Yen, 27 Feb 2015
Architecture students from CalPoly San Luis Obispo's Studio 400 decided to think out of the box when it came to showcasing their theses.
Using over 600 rolls or 35 miles of packaging tape, they put their work into a 2,500 sq. ft. spider web, with translucent tunnels which can comfortably fit five people as they read through papers written by the student designers of the program. With the students' papers hanging from egg sac-like pods, the installation encourages readers to curl up while reading the research.
The life-like installation titled STUCK took only four days to set up, but required months of designing and planning, using four to six layers of tape to make sure that it could handle people's weight.
STUCK has become a clear instance where something ordinary like packaging tape can be transformed into a tangible architectural beauty. Watch the video to see the whole building process.
