Meet The Man Who Visited Every Country In The World Without Quitting His Job
By Melissa Goh, 11 Aug 2015
Meet Gunnar Garfors, a Norwegian traveler who has visited all 198 countries in the world by the age of 37, while keeping his full-time job.
At the age of 17, Garfors started traveling without his family, visiting 13 countries in Europe with a friend. He told BuzzFeed, “I was then hooked.”
Garfors shares that he managed to visit countries while keeping his job by traveling on every opportunity he gets from holidays, days off, and weekends—in Norway, they get five weeks of paid leave and two weeks of national holidays.
He keeps to his traveling budget by saving up, and bunking in with strangers using sites like CouchSurfing or Hospitality Club, and also suggest on traveling light to avoid paying for checked in luggages.
His last country visited was on 8 May 2013 at Cape Verde, a trip made with two brothers, a sister, and 11 other friends—his mother lovingly wrote a letter to congratulate him on his traveling mission, and reminded him to start prioritizing time for his family.
After visiting Cape Verde, Garfors continued to visit 19 countries within a day, it includes Greece, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Macedonia, Switzerland, among many others.
His advice to other hobby travelers is simply to smile, “I smile a lot more now than what I used to. And I guess it works. I was recently told that I am a postcard for happiness!”
