According to 19th-century social reformer, Henry Ward Beecher, “the first hour of the morning is the rudder of the day”. A good morning can set the tone for a good day at work, while a bad one can make us want to give up and go back to bed. Although we have shared many articles about morning routines to adopt, there is no one-size-fits-all solution.
Fast Company speaks to productivity experts and shares some tips that will help you makeover your morning routine.
Remind yourself why you are doing it.
Write down what you want to accomplish each morning and list all the reasons why. If you find yourself getting “derailed” during the day, you can take out your list and review your aspirations. It will help you understand your priorities and help get you back on track.
Start preparing for your day the night before.
Founder of Organizing LA, John Trosko, suggests that the best morning routines start the night before. These include packing lunches, planning dinners or making sure your laptop and bag are packed. This helps ensure that your day can get off to a great start, especially if you have planned how it would go.
Get up earlier.
According to author Lorie Marrero, who wrote the book, The Home Office Handbook: Rules of Thumb for Organizing Your Time, Information, and Workplace, getting up 15 minutes earlier can help eliminate the feeling of being rushed.
Other tips include changing your physical state if you are not a natural morning person, timing your routine and eliminating the choices you make in the morning.
