NSFW: Graceful Ballet Dancers Photographed In The Nude On NYC’s Bustling Streets
By Yoon Sann Wong, 20 Oct 2016
It’s been hard work for photographer Jordan Matter, who has been capturing ballet dancers around the world for his book Dancers After Dark.
“I worked on Dancers After Dark exhaustively for two years…meaning I was exhausted every week! I photographed hundreds of amazing performers in many cities and countries. It was the most rewarding creative experience of my life, and I was truly sorry to see it end,” writes Matter in the book’s introduction.
The dancers featured come from various organizations such as “Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Dutch National Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Houston Ballet, Cirque du Soleil and more”.
While many artistes grace the book’s more than 250 pages, you will find dancers on the streets of New York City featured below, including Dutch National Ballet dancer Michaela DePrince, who stars on the front cover.
DePrince had moved from Harlem to Amsterdam and contacted Matter one day when she was visiting town, expressing her interest to participate in the shoot.
Matter recalls, “As we passed Seventh Avenue, the red streetlights and illumination from Times Square caught my eye. I thought it might be interesting to photograph Michaela right in the middle on a busy avenue…I was looking for a magic moment. Pedestrians were essential, but they had to be just right.”
The final image, shown below, has DePrince crossing the road in the nude–save for a pair of pointe shoes–with a couple in the background looking on.
