Have you been thinking of going freelance for some time, but are not sure if you are cut out for working on your own? This article by Design Shack may be able to help you make up your mind.
Featuring six characteristics that successful freelancers share, it shows the qualities necessary to make it as a freelance professional in the creative industries.
“Excellent communication skills: you will need to be adept at figuring out what clients want and each one may relay that information in a different way.”
As a freelancer, perhaps the most important part of your work is to maintain great working relationships with your clients—to do so, being a clear communicator, good listener and reliable partner who delivers on promises and deadlines is essential.
“Curiosity in everything: freelancers need to ask lots of questions.”
To produce outstanding work that will boost your reputation and bring in more business, freelancers have to go the extra mile to know the clients they are working for—to do so, they have to spend a lot of time on discussion and research.
“Ability to hustle: you might get to do work you love, but there are plenty of other parts you might not like.”
In a nutshell, freelancers would have to get out there, to network and bring in the business—you would probably also have to do things, such as issuing invoices, that you find uninspiring and tedious but necessary.
