Watch: Black Girls Write Negative Words Used To Describe Them On Their Bodies
By Dorothy Tan, 11 Jan 2017
To highlight the prejudice and stereotypes that black girls have to face in school, National Women’s Law Center created a video that focuses on the negative words used to describe these girls.
Sending the message that schools are biased against black girls in the classroom, this short clip—made for the organization's Let Her Learn initiative—features the girls with words like “aggressive”, “loud” and “unladylike” written on their bodies.
Due to these harmful stereotypes, black girls are punished more harshly than their white peers, even when the offences are comparable—for instance, black girls are suspended five times more than white girls, even when their offences are not more severe.
At the end of the video, the girls are seen rubbing the unfair words from their skin, to signify that these labels are not only untrue but also hurtful.
