Artist Mashes Up Classical Paintings With Scenes From Modern-Day Italy
By Izza Sofia, 19 Mar 2017
Ukrainian artist Alexey Kondakov superimposes characters found in classical paintings onto scenes of modern life.
In the past, Kondakov’s stunning collages are set in Kiev but for his latest series, the ‘Napoli Project’, he has employed Italy—the home of the High Renaissance—as his setting.
The Napoli Project combines painted figures with contemporary surroundings to create eye-catching juxtapositions. Having an eye for composition and knowledge of photo manipulation, Kondakov produces well-balanced and well-blended images that warrant more than a second glance.
Captivating Bouguereau and Waterhouse muses and a formal Hans Holbein portrait are a few of the classical characters that Kondakov re-contextualizes in his photo series.
