Artist ‘Erases’ The Border Between The US And Mexico
By Izza Sofia, 20 Mar 2017
Artist Ana Teresa Fernández set a giant ladder against the border wall that separates Playas de Tijuana from San Diego’s Border Field State park.
Using a generator and a spray gun, she embarked on a project called Erasing the Border by painting the bars powdery blue, allowing the fence to visually blend into the sky. She did all this while wearing a little black cocktail dress and black pumps.
Ana Teresa Fernández says the project is an effort to symbolically erase the U.S.-Mexico border, a place where personal, national and gender histories intersect. Born in Mexico, the border is a powerful symbol. Her journey of crossing the Tijuana-San Diego border to study and finding her future reflects the route taken by tons of women who have come from southern and central Mexico to work in the US, looking to make a better life for themselves and their families.
Erasing the border means visions, dreams and imaginations are not diminished.
