If you’ve been taking a lot of personality tests, you might have heard of the ‘Big Five’—an in-depth quiz measuring the five qualities many psychologists consider to be the core dimensions of personality: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism.
It seems straightforward enough, but people are likely to exhibit behavior that mirrors their character traits—though this aspect hasn’t been studied for the ‘Big Five’ until recently. As such, psychologists Benjamin P. Chapman and Lewis R. Goldberg have put this test to the challenge by studying “everyday” behavioral traits associated with the five dimensions.

The study shows that people who exhibit high levels of agreeableness tend to sing in the shower. Agreeable people are friendly, likeable, polite, and cooperative. While the term has a positive connotation to it, the downside is agreeable people might get so caught up with their social circles, they struggle with getting ahead at work.

The research suggests that extroverts enjoy telling “dirty jokes”. The chances of them displaying riskier behaviors are also higher—extroverts are more likely to use their phones while driving and speed at over 75 miles an hour.

Openness to Experience

Perhaps the most intriguing results of all belong to those who fall in the ‘openness to experience’ category. The study by Chapman and Goldman shows that these people are more likely to be artistic, curse in public, lounge around the house naked, spend at least an hour daydreaming, eat spicy food for breakfast, and not follow a sports team.
