For Photographers: Useful Tips On How To Earn $200,000 A Year For Your Work
By Izza Sofia, 17 May 2017
Making a living as a photographer can be a struggle. And a significant challenge to earning money with your images is simply not knowing where to start.
There are a lot of ways you can make money as a photographer—probably a lot more than you ever thought. These ideas could be very helpful, whether you are trying to get into photography, change your current direction, or add a new income stream to your existing business.
“In a future world where 7 billion people own a camera, you are going to have several billion people wanting to learn how to make better photos. And there are a lot of really rich people who want to learn how to make better photos.”
Firstly, organize your own workshop. One of the big benefits of hosting your own workshop is that you have complete freedom in how to market it. You can also sell your photography books and prints to supplement the fees from attendees. Many photographers make the bulk of their workshop income from the products they sell to students.
In addition, people do not mind spending money to learn how to capture good images. They could travel and meet people who are interested in photography as well.
“To build up an audience from 0, I wrote 1 street photography tips article every Monday, every Wednesday I interviewed 1 photographer, and every Friday I shared photos from the social media community.”
If you are as good with words as you are with the camera, combine the two and create a blog. Write useful articles that people can learn from. This way, those who find your tips useful will share your links, and your website will rank higher on Google.
“Another lesson: social media is overrated. 90% of my audience discovers me through Google, not Facebook or Instagram.”
Although social media is becoming increasingly popular, place only 10% of your efforts on it. You should focus more on your photography blog, find clients that would actually pay you and figure out more ways to earn. While “marketing” yourself is important, use the power of your photos and you will find more and more visitors visiting your social media platforms.
