Designers are constantly on the lookout for fresh, unconventional ways to showcase their work. An online portfolio not only exhibits the best of your past creations, but also doubles as a platform to flaunt your skills—when used strategically.
Not long ago, Katherine Schwab from Co.Design took to Twitter to ask designers for recommendations on some of the coolest, and most clever portfolio websites they’d come across recently.
The open call helped Schwab piece together a compilation comprising seven design portfolios that double as awesome UIs. While undoubtedly unique, uncommon portfolio designs don’t always sit well with everybody. If it’s confusing and difficult to navigate for the viewer, his or her attention will be lost within seconds. As graphic designer Kara Gordon expressed in response to Schwab’s tweet, “I’m not gonna lie, I usually hate ‘cool’ and ‘clever’ websites. I just want to see the damn work.”
In the preview below, you’ll get a peek at the unconventional and inspiring portfolios that belong to designer Nick Jones, illustrator Timo Becker, and creative studio HAWRAF.

The Fibonacci Spiral Scroll by Nick Jones

Don’t be fooled by the initial, seemingly unembellished view of Nick Jones’s portfolio. Start scrolling and you’ll be taken on a Fibonacci ride through the freelance designer’s work. Jones provides ample warning on the first page, “Do not proceed if you suffer from vertigo or find experimental interfaces offensive,” before providing a link to a more accessible version.
Less than a week ago, Jones announced this new design via his Twitter, which roused an amalgamation of responses. Some had their minds blown, some not so much—or more likely in a disorienting manner. Either way, it’s not every day you come across a portfolio that ropes in such dominant use of the golden ratio.

There’s high chance you’ve played ‘connect the dots’ as a child. Illustrator Timo Becker’s fun portfolio invokes this nostalgia from yesteryear by welcoming you via seven innocuous and strategically placed dots.
Use your mouse to connect them in any pattern you desire. Once they’re all linked, an animation comes to life, transforming the configuration into a cute animation. Have a go at the interactive site here.
