Watch: Vital Tips For Good Architectural Drawings, Explained Simply And Clearly
By Yoon Sann Wong, 10 Jul 2017
Eric W. Reinholdt—founder of 30X40 Design Workshop, an award-winning architect, and author of the Architect + Entrepreneur book series—shares vital tips on architectural drawing techniques in this easy-to-follow and clear tutorial.
Reinholdt starts off with a detail sketch, before proceeding to a basic section sketch, and several of his CAD working drawings to demonstrate how a simple toolset can produce a range of illustrations.
Concepts that he discusses inside the video include: line weight (as well as the pens that he uses); atmospheric perspective; drawing techniques; corners; iterations; foreground, middle ground and background; the ‘squint test’; shade and shadow.
The designer encourages you to find your own style by “seeking out the architectural drawings you like and try and duplicate their results.”
“Study their commonalities, how do they differ from the way you draw? Some of my favorites are found in the Detail in Contemporary Residential Architecture books or DETAIL magazines…all the German stuff,” explains Reinholdt.
