The 12 Phases Of Burnout, According To A Psychologist
By Dorothy Tan, 01 Aug 2017
We recently wrote about how you can avoid burnout—but what if you are already in the burnout process and have no idea?
Hamza Khan of 99u recently wrote a post that highlights the 12 stages of burnout, as defined by psychologists Herbert Freudenberger and Gail North.
At the beginning, people who are starting to suffer from “mental, emotional and physical exhaustion” due to work would feel the need to demonstrate their worth—at this stage, they may actually be very productive and enthusiastic.
However, this high is followed by downward spiral that is characterized by denial, withdrawal and depression—this is why it is important to identify the various phases of burnout, so that one would be able to self-diagnose and seek help.
Read in detail about the different stages of burnout here—do see any of these symptoms in yourself, or someone you know?
